In the evening of September 9, two British Army Majors, Julian Dolbey and George Jellicoe, plus a sergeant with a portable radio, were dropped by parachute on Rhodes. They were carrying a message from General Sir Henry Maitland Wilson for the Italian governor of the Italian Dodecanese, Admiral Inigo Campioni. They urged Italian forces to hold out against the Germans but warned that it might be a week or more before British troops could arrive on Rhodes. Campioni asked for British airstrikes on German positions in the south of Rhodes, but he was told that no aircraft were available for such operations. The British officers and sergeant, accompanied by an Italian colonel, were evacuated to the island of Kastelorizo during the night of September 10/11 without receiving any firm assurance from Campioni.
